Update, 29 July 2026: the first confirmed, bookable route has appeared on flight-booking apps — see our Husein Sastranegara flights now bookable update for the specifics.
Bandung's Husein Sastranegara Airport, which halted commercial jet service on 29 October 2023, is set to resume operations between mid-August and September 2026, following infrastructure upgrades led by the Bandung City Government and Ministry of Transportation. Indonesia's Minister of Transportation confirmed the August 2026 reopening directly, per ANTARA News' official report [1]. The Ministry has targeted 17 August 2026 for an initial reopening — coinciding with Indonesia's 81st Independence Day — with full commercial operations projected by 17 September 2026. At least 6 airlines have already applied to open domestic and international routes once the airport becomes active again. Note: this remains an official government target and could shift depending on infrastructure readiness on the ground.

Why Husein Sastranegara was closed
Since October 2023, all commercial jet traffic serving greater Bandung was consolidated at West Java International Airport (BIJB Kertajati) in Majalengka Regency, roughly 90-100 km from central Bandung. The shift was part of a strategy to establish Kertajati as West Java's primary gateway, while Husein Sastranegara — which shares its runway with the Indonesian Air Force base (Lanud) — went without commercial jet service during that period.
Planned flight routes
Initial domestic routes (starting August 2026):
- Bandung–Bandar Lampung: 3x weekly, ATR 72 aircraft, starting 6 August 2026
- Bandung–Palembang: Wings Air service, starting 7 August 2026
Additional planned domestic routes: Medan, Padang, Pekanbaru, Batam, Balikpapan, Pontianak, Denpasar, and Makassar — roughly 8-10 domestic routes total according to current media reports.
International routes under discussion: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor Bahru, with TransNusa and Scoot reportedly eyeing these routes for the August-September 2026 window.
What this means for travelers and airport transfers
The most significant difference versus Kertajati or Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta is distance: Husein Sastranegara sits only about 5 km from central Bandung, with a 15-30 minute transfer — compared to 2-2.5 hours from Kertajati or 3-3.5 hours from Jakarta. If the Singapore and Kuala Lumpur international routes materialize, this opens a genuinely new option for Southeast Asian travelers to fly directly into Bandung without transiting through Jakarta at all — a meaningful change for trip planning that previously always included a long overland transfer from Jakarta.
| Airport | Distance to central Bandung | Typical transfer time |
|---|---|---|
| Husein Sastranegara (BDO) | ~5 km | 15-30 min |
| Kertajati (KJT) | ~90-100 km | 2-2.5 hours |
| Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta) | ~150 km | 3-3.5 hours |

The Bandung City Government is fast-tracking several upgrades ahead of reactivation: access road improvements to the airport, drainage normalization in the surrounding area, upgraded street lighting, and parking area coordination with the Husein Sastranegara Air Force base. A branding strategy for the airport area is also being prepared to strengthen Bandung's identity for travelers landing directly in the city.
